Program Description

Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) is a rigorous and disciplined process that is used to plan and manage the execution of a product design program. It utilizes strategies, tactics and tools that enable product developers and their managers to ensure that all design efforts meet defined and realistic performance, quality, schedule, and cost targets.

The overall strategy behind DFSS is built around the notion that product design is a process. This process should be explicitly designed, disciplined, measurable, and repeatable. The overall design process is divided into four major phases:

  • Concept
  • Design
  • Optimize
  • Implement

Within each of these phases, a variety of business, Six Sigma, and design specific tools are applied to the development effort to ensure that the product meets the customer performance requirements as well as the schedule and profit needs of the business.

Datazinc’s DFSS program consists of 15 days of in-class training spanning a three-month period. There is a four week application period between each training phase.

A Datazinc Master Black Belt provides on-site support for each trainee during the application period to ensure their understanding and application of the methodology. Three half-days of support per trainee is typically required.

The DFSS Black Belt

Candidates for the DFSS program include any individuals that are responsible for directing or executing a product development effort. Participants should be self-starters, be open-minded and have a desire to drive change in an organization. They should be a team player and well respected by their peers.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of the DFSS course, the participant will be able to:

  • Execute the DFSS strategy in a product development environment and successfully apply DFSS tools on their development project
  • Help spread the Six Sigma culture by practicing the methodology in their day-to-day job
  • Collaborate with Six Sigma practitioners from other organizations on product and process development efforts
  • Define and validate customer requirements and translate them into product specifications and design
  • Develop, validate, and implement product and/or process performance metrics
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative assessments of measurement and inspection systems
  • Apply statistical experimentation and analysis tools to the design and optimization of products
